This update includes 1,289 PERMCO-RSSD links from January 1, 1990 to September 30, 2012. Compared with the previous update, which verified links through 2011q3, this dataset includes 114 additional links, 3 entity code corrections, and 52 links with corrected end dates, previously marked as valid through 2011q3. Of the 114 additional links, 70 were identified using the same matching methodology as our previous update; matching is based on name, city and state, and a match at the one percent threshold in balance sheet between the regulatory filing and the values in Compustat. 83% of these newly matched entities are thrift holding companies which are new to filing call report/Y-9C.
Additionally, some new matches emerged from a narrowing of the difference in balance sheet variables reported by Compustat and the regulatory filings. For this update, researchers checked in CRSP for any unmatched public commercial banks, savings institutions and bank holding companies based on SIC codes and NAIC codes as of 2012q3, resulting in 40 additional links to RSSD IDs. 83% of these entities only file form FR Y-9LP (Parent Only Financial Statements for Large BHCs) or FR Y-9SP (Parent Company Only Financial Statements for Small BHCs) and therefore were not captured in the call report/Y-9C match. The remaining were missed due to differences in the city name listed in the regulatory filing and in Compustat. Lastly, 4 links were identified using Standard & Poor's Capital IQ database to collect initial public offerings by banks since September 2011 and subsequently matching exchange-tickers to PERMCOs in CRSP.
