New York Fed to Release Research on the Economic Value of a College Degree

April 08, 2025

NEW YORK—On Wednesday, April 16 at 9:00 AM ET, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will release a two-part Liberty Street Economics blog series providing an economic perspective on the value of a college degree.

The blog posts update previous research and analysis examining the upfront economic costs, lifetime benefits, and return of a college degree. The research also considers when college might not be worth it and explores differences in the return on a college education by major.

The two blog posts to be released are:

  • Is College Still Worth It?”, which explores whether the economic benefits of a college degree still outweigh the costs for the typical graduate; and
  • When College Might Not Be Worth It”, which looks beyond the typical graduate and explores when college might not be worth it by considering those who pay higher-than-average out-of-pocket costs, take longer to complete college, or have below-average earnings. This post also examines differences by major.
