New York Fed to Release Research on Student Loan Balances and Borrower Credit Scores

March 24, 2025

NEW YORK—The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Center for Microeconomic Data will release its 2025 Student Loan Update on Wednesday, March 26 at 10:00 AM ET.

The 2025 Student Loan Update contains statistics summarizing who holds student loans along with characteristics of these balances using the New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel (CCP) with data through the end of 2024. This release builds upon the previous 2022 Student Loan Update and associated Liberty Street Economics blog post, which focused on trends in balances, credit scores, and delinquency rates.

In conjunction with the update, the New York Fed will publish two Liberty Street Economics blog posts looking at trends in student loan balances and repayment, in addition to the impact of delinquencies on borrowers’ credit score and credit standing.

Press Call on the Update and Blog Posts:

Authors of the update and blog posts will host a deep background press call on Wednesday, March 26 at 9:30 AM ET to provide further context on the research. Journalists interested in participating should RSVP to Mariah Measey at Mariah.Measey@ny.frb.org.
