DISTRICT PROFILE
Binghamton-Elmira Metro Areas

Broome, Tioga and Chemung Counties

Tables of selected demographics ››

Broome County, which includes the city of Binghamton, accounts for nearly two-thirds of this area's population. Tioga and Chemung counties are quite sparsely populated, although the latter includes the city of Elmira. All three counties have experienced population declines over the past decade.

These metro areas lag the state and the nation somewhat in income and educational attainment-median household income was roughly $36,000 in 1999, while 22 percent of adults held college degrees (see table below).

This area is dominated by defense-related manufacturing, and IBM has a fairly strong presence here, though not nearly as strong as it used to have. Both these metro areas saw steep job losses between 2001 and 2005 but employment appears to have leveled off in Binghamton in 2006 and has begun to recover in Elmira. As of the first half of 2006, median home prices range from $82,000 in Chemung County to $94,000 in Tioga and have risen only modestly in recent years.
